About this report or communique
Transparency statement
Audit Tasmania supports innovation through the careful and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), consistent with both the Australian policy (Policy for the responsible use of AI in government) and Tasmanian guidance (Guidance for the use of artificial intelligence in Tasmanian Government).
When used appropriately, AI can analyse large volumes of information to streamline internal work practices and improve efficiency.
We recognise that AI systems may contain biases, have limited contextual understanding, and cannot apply the values, professional judgement, and accountability required in audit work. Given the rapid and uncertain evolution of AI technologies, our approach remains adaptable to emerging risks and opportunities, in line with whole of government expectations for safe, ethical and transparent AI use.
Audit Tasmania has a low-risk appetite for the handling of sensitive and confidential information. Accordingly, AI use is restricted to approved tools that comply with mandated security, privacy and governance requirements under Tasmanian Government cyber security and information protection frameworks and the Australian AI Ethics Principles. Audit Tasmania’s AI Policy sets clear expectations for appropriate use to ensure human oversight, integrity of audit processes, and the protection of public sector information at all times.
Strategic position statement
Audit Tasmania adopts AI cautiously and purposefully to improve internal efficiency while maintaining the integrity and independence of our audit work. Our approach aligns with the Australian Government’s requirements for safe, transparent and accountable AI use and the Tasmanian Government’s guidance for responsible AI deployment in the public sector.
We will only use approved, secure AI tools, reflecting our low-risk appetite for handling sensitive and confidential information and our obligations under privacy and cyber security frameworks. AI will support, not replace, human judgement, with all outputs subject to oversight to ensure accuracy, fairness and professional integrity.
Audit Tasmania’s AI adoption will remain flexible and adaptive as technologies evolve, while consistently upholding public trust and the accountability expected of an independent integrity body.
